Vitez: Deminer Vinko Markovic Killed


11/25/2009 - Vitez – Fifty-three year old deminer Vinko Markovic from Vitez was killed this morning by the explosion of a landmine in Jardol Bukve in the Municipality of Vitez, it was reported by Serif Barucija, the Spokesman of the Police Department of the Central Bosnian Canton.

Markovic, who worked for the demining company “Amfibija”, activated a PROM-1 landmine (antipersonnel bounding fragmentation mine). The accident occurred this morning at 8.28 hours. Members of the Police Department of the Central Bosnian Canton inspected the site of the accident.

BHMAC is conducting an investigation into the death of the deminer.

Demining of 34,569 square metres of land at Jardol Bukve started on 16 November; so far more then 9,000 square metres of land has been cleared and 20 landmines and 3 UXO found.

To date in BiH 97 deminers have been injured, including 42 killed.
