Samac: Mine Clearance Continues

12/24/2009 - Samac – Samac area still has 6.7 square kilometres of land that is contaminated by landmines. “Over the next year the priority is to clear land in the local communities of Brvnik and Tisina”, the Head of Samac Civil Protection, Boro Bogdanovic, said to SRNA.

So far in the area of Brvnik and Tisina 714,833 square metres of land has been cleared.
The biggest tragedy occurred in the village of Brvnik when six people were killed by landmines in one day. Since the war 17 people have been killed and 15 injured in the Samac area.

Mr Bogdanovic said that minefield marking will continue over the next year in the local communities of Grebnice, Brvnik, Batkusa, Obudovac, Branica, Srednja Slatina and Kornica.
The Municipality of Samac has allocated 15,000 BAM for demining during this year with an additional 4,300 BAM for the accommodation of deminers in the village of Brvnik.

“We have destroyed 419 mines getting the maximum support from demining teams of Norwegian People’s Aid, team ‘A’ from Doboj and good cooperation with local staff. This has reduced the danger to the local population”, said Bogdanovic.
