Ninety Square Kilometres of Mine Contaminated Land in Konjic

12/31/2009 - Konjic – Municipality of Konjic has 89,173,300 square metres of suspect and mine contaminated land, which amounts to 5.6 percent of the total surface area of the Municipality. On this basis the Municipality of Konjic is one of the most mine contaminated municipalities in the Federation of BiH.

“The plan for 2009 was to demine 559,651.55 square metres of land, yet there was no activity”, said Husein Hodzic, Associate in the Civil Protection and Fire Department of the Municipality.

“During 2008 two locations were demined, in total 30,892.84 square metres of land. For 2009 we prepared 47 projects. The authorities accepted 14 projects with 559,651.55 square metres of land. We will have to move the plan to 2010, but without support from donors it will not be accomplished. The Municipality has an annual budget of 10,000 BAM for demining but it is usually not used”.

The priority locations for demining are the settlements of Studencica, Homatlije, Josanica, Mladeskovici, Tuscica, Gakici and others.
